The Heart of Daytime – Y&R’s Kate Linder Creates a Legacy of Charity

On April 10, 2008 Kate Linder became one of four personalities from daytime drama to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Y&R co-creator Lee Phillip Bell and castmate, the late Jeanne Cooper, spoke at her ceremony about her many attributes, and both agreed that at the top of the list, was her humanitarian efforts.

Kate is an eternal optimist and tireless worker for many charities and was named celebrity spokesperson for The ALS Association in early 2005 after her brother-in-law was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease.) Since then, Kate has gone to Washington, DC each May to lobby for more funds to fight this disease. In 2006, Linder won the organization’s All-Star Award for her passionate service to the cause and won their Packman Award in 2007. Kate travels around the country to participate in and encourage other volunteers at the ALS Association’s fundraisers, Walk to Defeat ALS, and in their fundraising dinners for local chapters. She’s also active with many AIDS charities, veteran programs, March of Dimes, and the Los Angeles Mission. Linder is also active with the USO, visiting troops in the US, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korea and Guantanamo Bay. She is currently involved with the “Kate Linder and Friends 2014 Annual Vancouver Afternoon Tea Benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society” (details below).

If you’re Kate Linder, you apparently never quit a job, even one as a United Airlines flight attendant, just because you’re cast for a one-day, one-line role on The Young and the Restless, or even after 32 years of doing both jobs simultaneously. Clearly Kate’s commitment to anything she loves is undeniable. This can also be said of her dedication to fans and the less fortunate, as she often finds it difficult to say no, when Kate hears of others in need. So dedicated is she, that when one fan wrote to say that “her sister was a fan and that she was very ill and could she send a signed photo for her birthday.” Kate was so touched but realized that the photo may not reach her in time, so she began searching for her until she found a number and called, saying “Hi, this is Esther Valentine and I wanted to call and wish you a Happy Birthday.” They spoke for sometime about her health and life and although she eventually did pass, the family remained in contact for years. Kate does her homework. “You cant just show up, and not understand why you are there. People ask how I pick the charities? I explain that you have to make sure that those organizations you support have a proven track record of getting the money directly to those who need it.”

In late ’05, Linder was elected Governor of the Daytime Programming Peer Group of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and she was reelected in ’07 for a second two-year stint. She is currently an active and longtime board member for SAG-AFTRA.
